Being in the northeast, winter can be a tough time for training and especially for cycling. This morning, it was 0 degrees and felt like -23. Not really the ideal conditions to go for an hour and a half ride outside. But that does not have to stop you from getting a great workout done and being even more efficient and productive than riding outside.
Bike trainers have traditionally received a poor initial reaction from people, including me. Unless you have to, who would want to sit inside, without going anywhere, and pedal for an hour or more? Since last year, I have progressively used a trainer more. TrainerRoad (www.trainerroad.com) is a great resource for people that might have just a basic trainer. You can use virtual power or if you have a power meter on your bike, it can receive those readings. You can create your own workouts, follow predesigned plans for a wide range of goals, or just pick different workouts based on time, intensity, or zone. The trainer is an absolute must. Even in nice weather, you should still dedicate some time to working out on the trainer as opposed to time on the roads. You can have a focused workout without having to stop at lights, worry about being cutoff, or dodging potholes. It’s still nice to get outside, but the trainer is the tool to capitalize on your work and put you in the best position to succeed.
It doesn’t matter anymore about what the weather might be. Just get on your bikes and ride!
